Physiology is a pre-clinical subject included in the First-Semester BUMS. It deals with the study of how the body functions, from cellular processes to systemic interactions.
A cell is the basic unit of life in physiology, essential for all biological functions. Diverse in type, cells form tissues, which then group into organs, each performing specific functions. These organs integrate into systems like the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive, working cohesively to maintain the body’s health (homeostasis). Understanding this hierarchical structure, from cells to organ systems, and the cellular processes is crucial for diagnosing and treating diseases.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The department follows the guidelines set by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), ensuring that the teaching hours, both for theory and practical sessions, are meticulously planned and executed. Theoretical knowledge is reinforced by practical applications, which help students appreciate the relevance of physiology in clinical settings.
Theory sessions enable the students to apply physiological concepts to real-life medical scenarios. Interactive teaching methods such as problem-based learning and case discussions are utilized to strengthen their critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills. This fosters a smooth transition from classroom learning to clinical practice, where students will use these principles to diagnose and treat patients effectively.
Practical sessions form a core component of the learning process, where students spend 280 hours engaging with real-life scenarios and laboratory work. These sessions are crucial for developing hands-on skills and a practical understanding of physiological concepts.
During these practicals, students are involved in:
- Measuring and interpreting vital signs.
- Gaining insights into respiratory and cardiovascular functions.
- Performing basic hematological assessments.
- Conducting general examinations of various body systems.
